Why did the US support brutal dictator regimes in latin america in the 70s and 80s?

Latin America has historically been known for corrupt leaders and mive poverty. Naturally, it's a great place for socialists and communists to infiltrate. Unfortunately, those people are the enemy of the United States and other Western governments, so there was intervention there.
